Craiglist addiction is strong right now...send help! Just bought a 2007 WRX STi with some serious rod knock. I don’t even get along well with Subarus, nor do I flat bill hat and vape.

I do have to admit it’s a pretty nice car...but my garage right now currently looks like a teenage dream garage :/

Time to start wrenching!

Going to build an engine for it?

Remove the rods.

Insert rotary.

Undecided. I will pull it apart and and evaluate the damage. My guess is new OEM shortblock, and remove the aftermarket exhaust and tune.

Boring maybe, but I think the value is found in an unmodified clean title Subaru these days.

Nice! I Had at 04' when I was 20. 6 months, 5 tickets. They way they are geared encourages bad behavior. If you want to drive like a normal person you’re rowing through the gears like crazy! Hope you enjoy it!

I like this idea way too much. Additionally, I think if I run it for another minute or so the rods might remove themselves.

I’d probably even have the audacity to go to a Subaru meet.

Haha I had an ‘02 WRX once upon a time with a similar experience. Now I do all my heavy driving at the track, so I think it will be OK.

Not a bad plan. Since the “all stock” value bump is going to be diminished by the new engine, it’d be worth it to get the stock car retuned to deal with the lean open loop condition and other stock tune issues. The 07 isn’t as bad as the 08-14 STIs but seeing the condition of the engine in the car, it wouldn’t hurt to make it a bit more reliable. I don’t know how good the Stage 1 Accessport tune is, but it’ll be less costly to go to a tuner and you’ll be able to ask for a more drivable and reliable tune as opposed to the biggest possible power bump.

I like your idea best.

The car did come with an Accessport and a wideband 02 sensor, so I might try the Stage 1 tune and monitor A/F. I’m excited to dive in and just see what all needs fixing at this point...haven’t thought too far ahead yet.

Yea, I’m sure I would be more responsible now as that was 10 years ago. There should be an age restriction for males on cars like the STi, like 25 at least haha.

If the car already has the Accessport, then go for it for sure. Their tunes are pretty safe, but stock means stock...after you go on NASIOC and see how many idiots are asking if they can run downpipes without a tune...well, it makes sense how many of these have engine failures.

I ran my WRX up to 160,000 miles on an aftermarket turbo, it was making about 300whp. It was fun, but between the speeding tickets and the punishing drivetrain (uprated clutch, lightweight flywheel) it ended up being a bit much for a daily driver.

Now that I have a fast car, I’m glad I didn’t have one when I was younger, I’d gotten myself into trouble. And on the age restriction, I got my M3 when I was 24.

My suggestion on an age restriction was not for fast cars in general just for the “kid friendly” STi/EVO esque cars.

I bought my first M3 when I had just turned 22, right after the STi. However I was/am a much more careful driver in the M3. Sure it’s fast, but “refined fast” and really nice. So there is more incentive to not drive like a jackass (for me anyway). The STi and the WRX that I had before it were the epitome of my immaturity, and I know the story is the same for many owners in the same age bracket.

For whatever reason, as soon as I got into European cars I became a much more “mature” driver.

I guess you’re right. Usually the STi/Evos have more of a boy racer image perpetuated by the young people who drive like that. Plus since Ms and AMGs are expensive, generally their drivers are older or young people with educations.

Yea, and surely there are out liars... People that make a lot of money young/parents dumb enough to buy their kids cars like that. Then their is the worst category...full blow adults that drive and act like children.

Agh, jealous! I would kill for an ‘07 STI. Just, uh, maybe not one with rod knock.

Hope you got a good deal.

This one’s probably not worth killing for haha. It certainly wasn’t priced like an STi. Not sure I’ll know if I got a good deal until I really get a chance to investigate.

Has crossed my mind. I think if the body were rough and engine were good I might pursue that route. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) the interior is perfect and the body is pretty nice apart from a crunched front bumper.

I think if I get into rally I need to be totally ok with wadding up the car.
